Endometrial Biopsy Q & A

What is an endometrial biopsy?

An endometrial biopsy is a test in which a sample of tissue is taken from your uterus, or endometrium, to evaluate for changes in your cell tissue. You may need an endometrial biopsy if your specialist at NA OB/GYN has concerns about cancer or cell abnormalities and wants to confirm or rule out a diagnosis.

Why would I need an endometrial biopsy?

An endometrial biopsy is most often recommended to assist in the diagnosis of abnormal menstrual bleeding. Signs that may indicate abnormal bleeding include:

  • Heavier than normal menstrual flow
  • Bleeding longer than normal
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Bleeding after menopause

The test is primarily recommended to confirm or rule out endometrial cancer.

What can I expect during an endometrial biopsy?

The endometrial biopsy is a simple procedure but must be conducted by trained professionals like the women’s health specialists at NA OB/GYN. During the procedure, your specialist has you lie down on the gynecological exam table. Then your specialist inserts a speculum into your vagina to separate your vaginal tissue to view your cervix.

Your specialist then cleans your cervix with a special solution and a thin suction tube is inserted into your uterus to take the tissue sample, which is then sent out to a lab for testing.

You may feel some discomfort during the removal of your tissue, but the biopsy is performed without the need for anesthesia. The entire procedure shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes.

You may experience some cramping and spotting after your biopsy. Your specialist provides specific instructions on how to take care of your wound following your procedure, which may include not using tampons and refraining from intercourse for a set period of time.

What happens after an endometrial biopsy?

Your specialist at NA OB/GYN should have the results of your endometrial biopsy within a week of your procedure. The biopsy is the most accurate test for diagnosing cervical cancer. In most cases, the test results are negative.

However, if your test results indicate cancerous cells, you and your specialist at NA OB/GYN work together to develop a treatment plan.

An endometrial biopsy is a simple test that provides valuable information about your health. To schedule a biopsy or to talk to a specialist about your abnormal menstrual bleeding, call NA OB/GYN today or request an appointment online.
